AC Not Cooling? 9 Reasons Your Air Conditioner Is Running But Not Blowing Cold Air in Utah
It is the most common summer call we get across Utah: the air conditioner is running but not cooling. The thermostat says 74, the house says 82, and the outdoor unit sounds like it is trying. If your AC is not blowing cold air, one of these nine problems is almost always the reason.
1. Dirty air filter
A clogged filter chokes airflow across the evaporator coil. The coil gets too cold, freezes, and then no air moves at all. Change the filter, turn the system off for a few hours to thaw, and restart. If it freezes again, you have a bigger problem and need AC repair.
2. Low refrigerant from a leak
Refrigerant does not get "used up." If it is low, there is a leak. Topping it off every summer is throwing money away and cooks the compressor. A proper air conditioning service finds and fixes the leak.
3. Dirty condenser coil
The outdoor coil sheds the heat pulled from your house. Cottonwood fluff, dust and grass clippings insulate it, and the system cannot reject heat. This is one of the top causes of AC not cooling in Utah's dry, dusty summers.
4. Failed capacitor
The run capacitor gives the compressor and fan motor the kick they need to start. When it weakens, the fan may spin but the compressor never starts, so the air is room temperature. Cheap part, common failure, quick fix for an emergency AC repair tech.
5. Frozen evaporator coil
Ice on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines means restricted airflow or low charge. Turn the system off, let it thaw, and get it diagnosed before it happens again.
6. Thermostat problems
Dead batteries, wrong mode, a wiring fault or a thermostat mounted near a heat source can all make it look like the AC is broken when it is simply not being told to run.
7. Bad contactor
The contactor is the relay that sends power to the outdoor unit. Pitted or stuck contacts mean the unit gets no power, or never shuts off.
8. Failed compressor
If the compressor hums and clicks but never starts, or trips the breaker on startup, it may be seized. Before you accept a replacement quote, get a second opinion. Many "dead compressors" are a capacitor or a hard-start issue. See our page on AC compressor repair.
9. Undersized or leaking ductwork
Sometimes the AC is fine and the ducts are losing 30% of the cold air into the attic. A static pressure test tells the story.
When to call
If the filter is clean, the thermostat is set correctly and the AC is still not cooling after a reset, call for air conditioning repair. Running a system with a frozen coil or low charge does real damage. We provide same-day AC repair in every Utah city, including Salt Lake City, Provo, Saint George and Ogden.
