Why Is My Furnace Short Cycling? Causes, Fixes and What It Costs to Repair

By Shub Air Conditioning & Heating Repair · 2025-11-20

Furnace short cycling means the furnace fires, runs briefly, shuts down, then repeats, sometimes dozens of times an hour. It drives up gas bills, heats the house unevenly and wears out the ignitor, blower and control board. Here is why it happens.

1. Restricted airflow

A dirty filter or closed vents cause heat to build inside the furnace. The high-limit switch shuts it down to prevent overheating. Change the filter and open the registers before anything else.

2. Dirty flame sensor

The flame sensor proves the burners lit. When it is coated with residue it cannot sense the flame, so the control board shuts off the gas within seconds. Cleaning it takes a technician ten minutes.

3. Faulty limit switch

A limit switch that trips too early will shut the furnace down when it is not actually overheating.

4. Blocked exhaust or intake

Snow, ice, leaves or a bird nest in the PVC vent pipes trip the pressure switch. Common after Utah snowstorms.

5. Thermostat location or wiring

A thermostat in direct sun or near a register satisfies too quickly. A loose wire causes erratic calls for heat.

6. Oversized furnace

A furnace too big for the house heats it so fast that it hits the set point in minutes and shuts off. The only real fix is correct sizing at furnace replacement.

7. Failing control board

Less common, but a board with a bad relay can cycle the furnace unpredictably.

What it costs

Flame sensor cleaning, limit switch replacement and vent clearing are among the least expensive furnace repairs we do. Ignitors and pressure switches are moderate. Control boards are higher. Every repair is a written flat price before the work starts. Schedule a furnace tune-up each fall and most short cycling never starts in the first place.
